MODERN ART, MANY WAYS
01 / CHOOSE YOUR OWN CENTURIES
A vast collection becomes manageable when you give it a theme. Choose two or three areas, leave space for an unexpected object, and let Central Park be the pause afterwards.

The Met is a place to build a personal route through art rather than attempt a single compulsory circuit. Its breadth makes it especially useful for travellers with different interests: you can agree on one shared starting point, then choose a second area that changes the subject. Culture Detour recommends beginning with a question, such as how artists picture power or how an object transforms an everyday ritual. That gives the visit a thread without turning it into homework.

Choose two main areas and one optional detour. Put your strongest interest first, while attention and energy are fresh. Within each area, stop for one object long enough to describe its material, scale and intended use before reading the label. If something catches your eye on the way, let it interrupt the plan. A route is useful when it creates room for discovery, not when it keeps you marching.
Check the closure list before arriving. On the review date, the Roof Garden was closed, with substantial closures affecting modern and contemporary art and Ancient West Asia and Cyprus. Other rooms also appear on the daily list. Avoid building an itinerary around a rooftop break or a collection photograph you found online. A museum-owned work can be travelling, in conservation or outside the current display; confirm anything essential independently.

Allow around three to four hours for a focused visit with a pause; this is an editorial planning estimate, not a minimum ticket requirement. A shorter visit can be satisfying when you limit its scope. The Friday and Saturday evening hours offer another way to fit the museum into a trip, although late opening does not promise empty galleries. Leave the rest of the day flexible enough to stop when concentration fades.
Standard adult entry is US$30. New York State residents and students in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut qualify for pay-what-you-wish admission, with a minimum payment. Bring suitable proof and read the online eligibility rules. Advance tickets are optional. Admission covers exhibitions and both Met locations on the printed date, but that shared ticket should not persuade you to rush between two distant museums.
Use the museum’s accessibility information to choose a step-free arrival, including the 81st Street entrance, and allow time for security even with a ticket. Travel light: luggage and large bags are not admitted. Small backpacks must be carried by hand or worn in front. A secure water bottle is permitted. Afterward, a Central Park walk is an easy change of pace if weather and energy cooperate.
Sunday–Tuesday and Thursday, 10:00–17:00; Friday–Saturday, 10:00–21:00. Closed Wednesdays, Thanksgiving, December 25, January 1 and the first Monday in May.
