11 / BEHIND THE SCREEN IN QUEENS
A museum about the craft of moving images. Let a chosen screening anchor the day, or keep a gallery visit open-ended.
Published date exception: 2026-10-12, 12:00–18:00. Confirm the museum calendar before visiting.

Museum of the Moving Image suits anyone interested in how films, television and digital media are made, rather than only which titles became famous. It also offers a useful change of pace for a group whose interests do not all point toward painting. Treat the trip to Astoria as part of the day and leave room around it. A focused museum visit followed by time in the neighbourhood makes more sense than squeezing Queens between two fixed Manhattan appointments.
The core exhibition, Behind the Screen, introduces the creative and technical work behind moving images through objects and interactive material. The ongoing Jim Henson exhibition examines another form of performance and construction. Try choosing a single question to connect them: how does a material object become a character, or how does a technical decision change what an audience feels? Recognising a familiar figure can start that enquiry, but it need not be the end of the visit.
Decide early whether you are coming mainly for galleries or for a particular film. A screening fixes a substantial block of time; it should anchor the schedule rather than become an afterthought squeezed into the last hour. Check the film's running time, language, age suitability and access features on its own listing. None of those details can be inferred from the museum's general ticket. Leave time before the screening to settle in rather than planning to arrive at the last minute.
Museum admission can include one same-day screening or event priced below the admission charge, subject to availability; ask for the screening ticket on arrival. It does not promise a seat at any performance you choose. Visitors buying a film ticket can add same-day galleries for US$2.50. Popular screenings merit advance booking. The museum's published policy makes sales final and adds US$1.50 per online ticket, so compare the actual combination before paying.
For galleries alone, allow about two to three hours as an editorial estimate, adding the film and a break separately. Pick the exhibition that matters most before using the remaining time for other displays. An interactive museum still involves reading, standing and concentration, and a party with mixed interests may enjoy agreeing a meeting point after exploring at different speeds. The official visual story and sensory resources can help visitors decide what to expect before travelling.
The usual opening pattern is Thursday and Friday afternoons plus the weekend; Thursday 14:00–18:00 gallery admission is free. A special Monday opening is listed for 12 October 2026, 12:00–18:00, but that does not make every Monday an opening day. Adult gallery admission is otherwise US$20. The lobby, café and courtyard have a separate free-access initiative during opening hours; that is not the same as free galleries or screenings. Recheck holiday notices and allow a travel buffer.
Thursday 14:00–18:00, Friday 14:00–20:00, Saturday–Sunday 11:00–18:00. Usually closed Monday–Wednesday, with explicitly listed holiday exceptions.
Adults 18+ US$20; seniors 65+ and students 18+ US$12; ages 3–17 US$10; under-3s free. Online purchases add US$1.50 per ticket.
No. Screenings require their own ticket and the selected programme’s terms apply. Free gallery hours should not be marketed as unrestricted free cinema.
