THE NEW YORK MUSEUM GUIDES
New York rewards a museum plan built around one strong interest. Choose a collection, exhibition or building that you genuinely want to spend time with, then keep the rest of the day flexible. A celebrated name is not automatically the right fit for every traveller. Your age, residency, date and chosen exhibition can also change what you need to pay, so establish those details before comparing tickets.

The Met offers historical breadth and many possible routes through different cultures. MoMA is a more direct choice for visitors whose interests centre on modern art, design, photography and film. Select two or three sections rather than trying to exhaust either collection. Both are paid museums for many visitors, with eligibility-based alternatives that should be checked before any third-party purchase.

The Whitney connects American art with a West Side setting and outdoor views when terraces are available. The expanded New Museum reopened in March 2026, offering another contemporary option downtown. A collection or artist appearing on a website is not a guarantee of a particular work being displayed.

The Morgan connects books, drawings and manuscripts with its historic library and modern additions. Cooper Hewitt turns attention toward design; at this review its upper galleries are closed and a reduced-price first-floor visit is the available option.

Brooklyn Museum can anchor a borough day, while Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria suits film and media interests. For the latter, a screening determines the schedule and needs the appropriate ticket. Account for travel separately from time in the galleries.
Cloisters visit guideBrooklyn Museum visit guideMoving Image visit guideThe Whitney is free every day through age 25, and its Friday evenings and second Sundays are free for everyone with the required ticket. MoMA’s free Friday evenings are restricted to New York State residents. The Morgan has reserved free Fridays and separate historic-room-only free periods. Museum of the Moving Image offers free Thursday galleries; Cooper Hewitt has a daily pay-what-you-wish final hour. Brooklyn’s in-person suggested admission excludes separately ticketed exhibitions. A discounted, suggested or free period is never a blanket promise of entry to every show.

The announced reopening is November 12. Café and shop access follow separate arrangements. It should not appear in an “open today” result or carry a suggestion of immediate gallery admission; check the museum’s announcement before booking a later visit.
Neue Galerie closure and future visit guideChoose a Museum Mile day with an outdoor break, or a Whitney and waterfront art walk. These are editorial self-guided plans, not timed tours or audited accessible routes. Weather, park notices, elevator outages and your own pace can change them. A second museum is an option, not the measure of whether the day succeeded.
Museum Mile, with room to breatheWhitney, waterfront and High LineDirect museum admission is the baseline. A live guided tour, a reseller entry ticket and an audio app are different products. Check inclusions, total in USD, service fees, timed-entry requirements and cancellation terms. A city pass should be tested against the specific museums you will actually visit and your free-entry eligibility. New York CityPASS C3 and C-All are not treated as CJ-eligible offers in this package. No affiliate commission or merchant acceptance is assumed.
