12 / GERMAN AND AUSTRIAN MODERNISM
A focused museum of early twentieth-century German and Austrian art and design. Galleries are currently closed for installation; the announced reopening is November 12, 2026.
Galleries temporarily closed. Announced reopening: 2026-11-12. Gallery admission is not currently offered here.

As checked on October 11, 2026, Neue Galerie’s galleries remain closed. The museum announces their reopening for November 12 with its anniversary exhibition. The café and shops have resumed their regular schedules, but that does not make the art galleries accessible. Treat the date as an announced plan and recheck before travelling. Culture Detour recommends keeping another museum option in reserve if your trip depends on a particular opening day.

Once the galleries reopen, the museum’s concentration on early twentieth-century German and Austrian art and design offers a useful alternative to a broad survey. Painting and applied arts can be considered together: how does a line behave in a portrait, a patterned surface or a practical object? Rather than arriving with a long list of celebrated names, choose one visual question and see where it leads. Check the announced display before making a specific work the purpose of your visit.
A productive self-guided exercise is to compare two objects with different uses. Notice their shape, the treatment of a figure or the balance between ornament and empty space. Ask what kind of life each object assumes, and who might have bought or used it. Then read the interpretation for the social and historical setting. This makes decorative arts part of the central experience, rather than a passage between the paintings you came expecting.
Allow roughly ninety minutes to two hours after reopening, extending that if a temporary exhibition particularly interests you. These are editorial estimates. Plan an initial circuit, then return to a few things rather than moving immediately to another museum. The free audio guide can support that second look; bring your own headphones. A close encounter with a compact subject can be enough for a day, especially if you give yourself time to discuss it afterwards.
Under-twelves are normally excluded from the galleries during regular hours, although infants may enter in a front-worn carrier or sling. Visitors aged twelve to sixteen must be accompanied by an adult. Families with younger children should check dedicated programmes instead of assuming a standard ticket solves the restriction. All four public levels are wheelchair accessible according to the museum; contact Visitor Services about individual arrangements. Photography is not allowed in the galleries, and strollers must remain outside them.
Café Sabarsky can be a reason to visit while the galleries are closed, or a companion to an art visit later. Breakfast and lunch seating is first-come, first-served; dinner reservations are offered separately. Do not make a tightly timed museum entry depend on a café queue. If you want a relaxed sequence, leave a generous gap or eat afterwards. The café’s service and event hours also need their own check, since they differ from gallery hours.
From November 12: Monday and Wednesday–Sunday, 10:00–18:00, last gallery entry 17:30. Adult admission US$28; seniors 65+ US$18; students, educators and disabled visitors US$15. Check holiday exceptions.
No, walk-ins are welcome when galleries are open. Advance timed tickets are available but do not guarantee expedited entry. Groups of eight or more require group tickets.
November 13, 2026, 17:00–20:00, with first-come entry and possible queues. The event is explicitly moved from November 6. Verify later dates on the programme calendar.
No current shared-ticket entitlement is advertised. Neue Galerie says it remains a separate museum while a proposed 2028 merger is pursued; use its own admission information.
