Luxury hotels near the Met: where art lovers stay on the Upper East Side

Three of New York's great luxury hotels are within a 10-minute walk of the Met, and each has art of its own. Here is how they compare, plus the Met rules that save you time.

In this article

One of the loveliest rooms from Paris's Hôtel de Crillon is not in Paris at all. An 18th-century boudoir from the Crillon now sits inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and it is one of the quiet surprises of a neighbourhood built for art lovers.

The Upper East Side is the rare place where a five-star hotel and a world museum share a postcode. From Madison Avenue in the 70s you can be on the Met's steps in under ten minutes, see the Temple of Dendur before lunch, and be back for a drink under Ludwig Bemelmans's murals. We compared four luxury hotels by walking time, measured on OpenStreetMap to the Met's Fifth Avenue entrance, and by the art inside each one.

The Carlyle: our pick, and a bar painted by Bemelmans

Ludwig Bemelmans's Central Park murals inside Bemelmans Bar at The Carlyle.
  • A Rosewood hotel.
  • 35 East 76th Street, New York, NY 10021
  • About 9 minutes to the Met and 9 to the Frick.

Ludwig Bemelmans, the author of Madeline, painted the walls of the hotel bar with scenes of Central Park, and Rosewood says it is the only surviving public commission of his work.

The Carlyle is the classic Upper East Side address, on Madison Avenue among galleries and auction-house neighbours, which makes it the natural base for a slow museum week: the Met, the Frick and the Neue Galerie are all within a short walk.

A perfect art day from here

  1. Morning: walk 9 minutes to the Met for the 10:00 opening and go straight to the Temple of Dendur.
  2. Afternoon: the Frick, about 9 minutes from the hotel.
  3. Evening: Bemelmans Bar, with its Central Park murals.

Honest drawback: Bemelmans Bar is one of the most famous bars in New York, so it gets busy in the evenings. Check the current music and reservation policy with the hotel.

The Mark: the closest luxury hotel to the Met

The Mark hotel on East 77th Street on the Upper East Side.
  • Luxury hotel with interiors by Jacques Grange.
  • 25 East 77th Street, New York, NY 10075
  • About 7 minutes to the Met.

The Mark is the shortest walk to the Met of any hotel here, and its interiors are by the French designer Jacques Grange. The Mark Bar, off the lobby, is made for a late drink after a Friday night at the museum.

Being this close lets you split the Met into two short visits, a morning and a Friday evening, instead of one exhausting day. The Guggenheim and the Neue Galerie are further up Fifth Avenue on the same Museum Mile.

A perfect art day from here

  1. Friday morning: the Met at 10:00, 7 minutes away.
  2. Afternoon: walk up Fifth Avenue to the Guggenheim.
  3. Evening: back to the Met until 21:00, when the galleries are quieter.

Honest drawback: It is a very social hotel and the bar is busy. Light sleepers should ask for a higher, quieter room.

The Surrey: a contemporary collection on 76th Street

  • A Corinthia hotel, reopened in October 2024.
  • 20 East 76th Street, New York, NY 10021
  • About 9 minutes to the Met and 8 to the Frick.

Corinthia reopened The Surrey on 25 October 2024 after a full redesign. Its art collection, curated with VISTO Gallery, spans New York art from the 1920s to today, with works by Willem de Kooning, Jasper Johns, Helen Frankenthaler, Alex Katz, George Condo, Robert Mapplethorpe and Ruth Asawa.

That makes it the most interesting choice if you are in town for the Met's European paintings but want contemporary art in the corridors when you get back.

Honest drawback: It is the newest of the four, so it has the shortest track record. Check which artworks are in public areas if the collection is the reason you book.

The Pierre: a painted Rotunda on Central Park

The Pierre hotel tower on Fifth Avenue facing Central Park.
  • A Taj hotel.
  • 2 East 61st Street at Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10065
  • About 24 minutes to the Met along Central Park and 11 to the Frick.

The Pierre's Rotunda is covered, walls and ceiling, with Edward Melcarth's 1967 trompe-l'oeil murals of mythological figures and New York society, restored in 2016. It is one of the most painted rooms in any New York hotel.

From 61st Street the walk to the Met follows Fifth Avenue along Central Park, about 24 minutes. In good weather it is a pleasure, not a commute.

Honest drawback: It is the furthest from the Met. Pick it for Central Park views and Midtown, with the Met as a morning walk or a short taxi.

How to choose

Choose The Carlyle for the classic art-lover's New York. Choose The Mark for the shortest walk. Choose The Surrey for contemporary art in the hotel itself. Choose The Pierre if you want Central Park and Midtown, with the Met as a walk along the park.

  • A highlights tour is worth it at the Met more than at most museums: the collection spans 5,000 years, and a guide takes the guesswork out of the route.
