A reason to go
The Louvre rewards a visit with a clear centre of gravity. Its palace setting and collections of painting, sculpture and antiquities can support very different afternoons: a first encounter with Renaissance painting, a close look at Greek sculpture or a journey through ancient Egypt. Choose the subject that genuinely interests you before choosing a ticket. Trying to collect every famous name usually leaves less time to notice what makes an individual work worth seeing.
The celebrated works, with a little context
The Mona Lisa, Winged Victory of Samothrace and Venus de Milo are useful starting points, rather than a complete itinerary. The Louvre's own visitor trails help connect these works to their surroundings. At the Winged Victory, look at how the figure and its staircase setting work together; with the Venus, consider the surviving pose and the questions left by the missing parts.

Give the palace a place in the visit
The rooms are more than passages between artworks. Choose one gallery or courtyard where the architecture holds your attention, then give it the same unhurried looking time as a painting. This is an editorial suggestion for making a large museum manageable, not a claim that every space is open every day.

Who this museum suits
Best suited to visitors who want major historical collections and are comfortable narrowing their ambitions. A first-timer with two particular interests can get more from a focused visit than from a long checklist. If your main interest is Impressionism, compare Orsay before committing most of your museum day here. If standing and long indoor distances are difficult, use the museum's access information to plan an appropriate route.
Shape your visit
Before booking, choose one principal collection and two or three works you especially want to see. Check the current map and room information, then build a route around that cluster. Leave a margin for the entrance process and moving between levels.
Treat a temporary exhibition as a separate block of attention. If you include one, shorten the permanent-collection route rather than attaching it to an already full plan. Finish the works that matter most before any optional detour; the last part of the visit should be flexible.
How much time to allow
Allow about 2½–4 hours for a selective first visit, excluding queues, meals and travel. This is an editorial planning range, not an official duration or a promise that the whole museum can be covered.
Practical limits to keep in mind
The famous works can attract concentrated crowds, and a booked entry time does not remove security checks. The Louvre says an exit is final, so arrange any breaks accordingly. Rooms begin clearing before the advertised closing time. There is no dependable shortcut that makes a very short visit equivalent to a longer, focused one.
The published adult rates distinguish eligible EEA visitors (€22) and other visitors (€32). Check the museum’s eligibility and exemption rules before buying. A timed booking does not remove security checks.
Autumn 2026 exhibition
Zurbarán is scheduled for 7 October 2026–25 January 2027. Check the official exhibition page and ticket flow if this is the main reason for your visit.
Questions before you go
Do I need to reserve?
The museum recommends a time-slot reservation, including for visitors eligible for free admission. Buy through the official ticket link or compare a clearly described guided product. Do not interpret a seller's queue wording as exemption from security.
Why are two adult prices shown?
At review, the official page lists €22 for eligible EEA residents and/or citizens and €32 for other adult visitors. Exemptions and proof requirements matter; check which category applies before payment.
Can I visit in the evening?
The usual Wednesday and Friday closing time is 21:00. Other open days close at 18:00; Tuesday is the weekly closure. Last admission is one hour before closing, with room clearance starting 30 minutes before.
