The best luxury hotels near the Louvre for art lovers

Sleep where Pissarro painted and the surrealists stayed: eight Palace and five-star hotels near the Louvre, compared by walk time, art and stories.

In this article

In January 1898, Camille Pissarro checked into a hotel across the street from the Louvre and painted the view from his window. One of those paintings is now in Los Angeles. The hotel is still there, and you can book it.

That is the kind of hotel this guide is about. We picked eight Palace and five-star addresses within a short walk of the museum, chosen for the art inside them, the stories behind them and how fast they get you to the galleries.

The eight hotels at a glance

Walk times are our estimates from each hotel's front door to the Louvre entrance, using OpenStreetMap walking routes at an easy pace. All eight sit in the top price band, so check live rates for your dates.

Insider tips before you book

A few minutes of planning matters more than the thread count when the Louvre is the reason for the trip.

Book your Louvre slot and the rest of your art day

Book your Louvre slot first. The museum's own website sells timed tickets, and if you would rather hand over the planning, a small-group or private guide includes tickets and builds the route around what you love. Then fill the rest of the day with the tickets below, all within an easy walk of the hotels in this guide.

The Musée des Arts Décoratifs is the insider choice: it sits inside the Louvre palace itself, in the Rohan wing on rue de Rivoli, with its own entrance and far smaller crowds.

Le Meurice: our pick, the surrealists' hotel

The arcaded rue de Rivoli facade of Le Meurice, with flags above the entrance.
  • Palace distinction (Atout France, 2026). Three MICHELIN Keys.
  • 228 rue de Rivoli, 75001 Paris
  • About 8 minutes to the Carrousel entrance, 12 to the Pyramid, 8 to the Orangerie and 14 to Musée d'Orsay.

The MICHELIN Guide calls Le Meurice the hotel of kings, and means it literally: since opening in 1835 it has hosted Queen Victoria and King George VI, as well as Picasso, Dalí and Coco Chanel. The hotel says it mirrors the surrealist artists who called it home, and Restaurant Le Dalí, designed by Philippe Starck, keeps the painter's name on the door.

Art turns up in unexpected places. Pastry chef Cédric Grolet is known for trompe-l'oeil sculpted fruit, sold in the hotel's own pâtisserie. On the seventh floor, the Belle Étoile suite has a private terrace with a 360-degree view over the Paris rooftops, and some rooms and suites look straight over the Tuileries Garden.

A perfect art day from here

  1. Morning: cross rue de Rivoli and walk 8 minutes through the Tuileries to the Orangerie for Monet's Water Lilies.
  2. Midday: walk the length of the garden back to the Louvre, about 15 minutes, and enter at the Carrousel entrance.
  3. Evening: on a Wednesday or Friday, stay in the galleries until closing, then it is 8 minutes home.

Honest drawback: Garden views are not standard in every room, and the courtyard-side rooms are a different experience. If the Tuileries view is the point, book a category that names it and confirm with the hotel.

Hôtel du Louvre: sleep inside a Pissarro

Camille Pissarro painting of the Place du Théâtre-Français seen from above, with carriages, trees and crowds.
  • Five-star, in The Unbound Collection by Hyatt.
  • Place André Malraux, 75001 Paris
  • About 2 minutes to the Carrousel entrance, 7 to the Pyramid and 13 to Musée d'Orsay.

In January 1898, Camille Pissarro settled into a room here with a view over avenue de l'Opéra, the Place du Théâtre-Français and rue Saint-Honoré, and wrote to his son that it was very beautiful to paint. The canvases he made from these windows are now spread across museums, from Los Angeles, which owns the painting shown above, to the Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid. Stand on Place André Malraux today and the composition is still recognisable.

Hyatt adds two more surprises. The hotel was the first grand hotel chosen by Napoleon III, in 1855, and Sigmund Freud wrote his study of Leonardo da Vinci in one of its suites in 1910. Some rooms have balconies over avenue de l'Opéra, the Comédie-Française and the Louvre.

A perfect art day from here

  1. Morning: be at the Carrousel entrance, 2 minutes away, for the first timed slot.
  2. Lunch break: walk 3 minutes to the Palais-Royal and Daniel Buren's striped columns in the Cour d'Honneur.
  3. Late afternoon: go back to Place André Malraux and find Pissarro's viewpoint for yourself.

Honest drawback: It is not a Palace, and Place André Malraux is one of the busiest crossroads in central Paris. Light sleepers should ask for a courtyard-side room, while Pissarro fans should ask for a room facing the square.

Hôtel Regina Louvre: where kings learned to ride

The Hôtel Regina facade on Place des Pyramides, with the gilded Joan of Arc statue in front.
  • Five-star.
  • 2 place des Pyramides, 75001 Paris
  • About 3 minutes to the Carrousel entrance, 7 to the Porte des Lions, 8 to the Pyramid and 11 to Musée d'Orsay.

The Regina stands on the site of the royal riding academy where, according to the hotel, Henri III, Henri IV and Louis XIII learned to ride. It opened for the 1900 Universal Exhibition, its founders brought in some of the most talented artists and cabinetmakers of the day, and the fourth generation of the same family still runs it. In 1919 the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies was founded in its salons, a moment marked by a plaque on the facade.

Out front, Emmanuel Frémiet's gilded Joan of Arc rides through the Place des Pyramides. Film fans will know the interiors from Nikita, Red 2 and Dalida. Depending on the room, the view is the inner courtyard or the whole sweep of the Tuileries.

A perfect art day from here

  1. Morning: walk 1 minute to the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in the Louvre's rue de Rivoli wing for design and decorative art.
  2. Afternoon: cross the Tuileries and the Seine to Musée d'Orsay, about 11 minutes, for the Impressionists.
  3. Evening: back for a drink in the hotel's English Bar.

Honest drawback: Wellness is limited to a sauna, steam room and fitness centre, with no pool listed. Choose one of the Palaces if a spa afternoon is part of your plan.

Cheval Blanc Paris: a collector's apartment in La Samaritaine

The Art Deco stone facade of La Samaritaine on quai du Louvre under a blue sky.
  • Palace distinction, new in 2026. Three MICHELIN Keys.
  • 8 quai du Louvre, 75001 Paris
  • About 11 minutes to the Carrousel entrance, 15 to the Pyramid and 17 to Musée d'Orsay.

LVMH's Paris hotel occupies part of La Samaritaine, the Art Deco building Henri Sauvage designed in 1928, brought back by marble workers, gilders and ironworkers. Architect Peter Marino planned the interiors like a private apartment: paintings by Vik Muniz and Sonia Delaunay hang near pieces by Philippe Anthonioz and the Lalanne couple.

Look for the horse. Frank Gehry was commissioned to make the hotel's emblem, and says the project pushed him into new creative territory. Sophie Mallebranche's woven-metal staircase leads down to the Dior Spa, Ingrid Donat's gilded bronze panels greet you at the lifts, and the windows frame the Seine and the Pont Neuf.

A perfect art day from here

  1. Morning: walk 8 minutes to the Bourse de Commerce for the Pinault Collection's contemporary art.
  2. Afternoon: continue to the Louvre's Carrousel entrance, about 10 minutes, for a focused old-masters visit.
  3. Another day: allow about 25 minutes on foot to Musée Picasso and the Marais galleries.

Honest drawback: At about a quarter of an hour from the Pyramid, it is one of the longer walks on this list, and the look is bold and modern. If you dream of gilded classical salons, Le Meurice or the Crillon will suit you better.

Nolinski Paris: walk up through the clouds

The orange-red ground-floor frontage of Nolinski Paris on avenue de l’Opéra.
  • Five-star. Two MICHELIN Keys.
  • 16 avenue de l'Opéra, 75001 Paris
  • About 5 minutes to the Carrousel entrance and 11 to the Pyramid.

Interior designer Jean-Louis Deniot gave Nolinski the feel of a collector's private apartment, with Carrara marble, mouldings, ceramics and a careful play of light and mirrors. The signature moment is the grand staircase, painted so that you climb up through the clouds.

It sits between the Comédie-Française and the Louvre, which makes it the quiet design choice for travellers who want a smaller hotel within an easy walk of the museum.

A perfect art day from here

  1. Morning: walk 5 minutes to the Carrousel entrance for an early slot.
  2. Afternoon: 4 minutes to the Palais-Royal for Buren's columns and the arcades.
  3. Evening: a play at the Comédie-Française, a short walk away.

Honest drawback: The art here is decoration, not history or a collection, so it lacks the stories of its older neighbours. Avenue de l'Opéra is a major street, so ask about quieter rooms.

Hôtel de Crillon: the boudoir that ended up at the Met

The colonnaded 18th-century facade of the Hôtel de Crillon on Place de la Concorde.
  • Palace distinction. Two MICHELIN Keys. Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star 2026.
  • 10 place de la Concorde, 75008 Paris
  • About 9 minutes to the Orangerie, 17 to the Louvre's Carrousel entrance and 21 to the Pyramid, mostly through the Tuileries.

In 1755 Louis XV commissioned Ange-Jacques Gabriel to design the square that became Place de la Concorde, and the house at number 10 was decorated by the designer and collector Pierre-Adrien Pâris. The ceilings of its main reception rooms are listed historic monuments. One of Pâris's boudoirs was sold off when the house became a hotel, and it is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The guest list reads like a museum catalogue. Peggy Guggenheim, Jean Cocteau and the sculptor César were regulars, César designed a mirrored bar, Andy Warhol attended the Debutante Ball in 1992, and in 1919 delegations laid the foundations of the League of Nations here. Today Karl Lagerfeld's Les Grands Appartements suites overlook the square.

A perfect art day from here

  1. Morning: walk 9 minutes to the Orangerie as soon as it opens.
  2. Midday: cross to the Petit Palais, about 12 minutes from the Orangerie, for its free permanent collection.
  3. Afternoon: walk the full length of the Tuileries to the Louvre.

Honest drawback: It is the furthest hotel here from the Louvre entrances, at about 20 minutes on foot. If the Louvre is your only museum, choose somewhere closer.

Check availability on the official site: Hôtel de CrillonPlain link to the hotel’s own website. No commission.

Ritz Paris: the literary legend

The Ritz Paris entrance on Place Vendôme, with awnings and cars outside.
  • Five-star. Three MICHELIN Keys. Not on the Palace list; French press reports the Ritz has chosen not to apply.
  • 15 place Vendôme, 75001 Paris
  • About 12 minutes to the Carrousel entrance, 16 to the Pyramid and 12 to the Orangerie.

César Ritz founded the hotel with the chef Auguste Escoffier, and its legends are mostly literary. According to the MICHELIN Guide, the Prestige Suites are named after guests such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Frédéric Chopin, the Hemingway Bar is full of relics from the writer's life, and afternoon tea is served in the Salon Proust.

Architect Thierry Despont's renovation was meant to improve the hotel without changing it, adding light, raising ceilings and giving the Espadon restaurant a retractable glass roof.

A perfect art day from here

  1. Morning: cross Place Vendôme and walk about 12 minutes to the Orangerie.
  2. Afternoon: walk through the Tuileries to the Louvre.
  3. Evening: a drink in the Hemingway Bar.

Honest drawback: Its story is about writers, not painters. If seeing art is the whole point of your trip, Le Meurice or Hôtel du Louvre puts you closer to it, both on the map and in spirit.

Hôtel Madame Rêve: luxury in the old post office

The long stone facade of the Louvre Post Office building on rue du Louvre.
  • Five-star.
  • 48 rue du Louvre, 75001 Paris
  • About 11 minutes to the Carrousel entrance and 16 to the Pyramid.

The Louvre Post Office opened on 14 July 1888 as a showpiece of modern Paris. The hotel says its architect even recycled horse manure into the heating system. The building sorted mail until 2009, and nine years of work turned part of it into Madame Rêve, which opened in October 2021.

Rooms nod to the postal past with mail-art details and postcards, a first-floor restaurant sits in the former mail-processing hall under an eight-metre ceiling, La Plume looks onto the church of Saint-Eustache, and the rooftop takes in the city skyline.

A perfect art day from here

  1. Morning: walk 4 minutes to the Bourse de Commerce for the Pinault Collection.
  2. Afternoon: continue about 10 minutes to the Louvre's Carrousel entrance.
  3. Evening: sunset drinks on the rooftop.

Honest drawback: Although it is on rue du Louvre, walking routes go around the palace, so the Pyramid is about a quarter of an hour away. It also has the least old-world atmosphere of the eight.

How to choose by your art plan

Louvre at opening time: Hôtel du Louvre, the Regina and Nolinski are all within about 5 minutes of the Carrousel entrance.

Orsay across the river: the Regina is about 11 minutes on foot from Musée d'Orsay, Hôtel du Louvre about 13 and Le Meurice about 14. Orsay is open during its renovation, with changed entrance routes.

Tuileries and the Orangerie: Le Meurice and the Crillon are each about 8 to 9 minutes from the Orangerie, with the Ritz about 12.

Contemporary art and galleries: Cheval Blanc and Madame Rêve are the closest to the Bourse de Commerce, and the best starting points for the Marais galleries.

Also considered

Mandarin Oriental, Paris on rue Saint-Honoré is still five-star but lost its Palace distinction in 2026, with major renovation work reported ahead. Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme also lost the distinction and is about 18 minutes from the Pyramid. Mandarin Oriental Lutetia is a Palace, but it is on the Left Bank, too far for a Louvre-focused stay.

How we chose

We shortlisted hotels on the 2026 Atout France Palace list or with an official five-star rating, within roughly 15 minutes' walk of a Louvre entrance, with the Crillon as a Tuileries-side exception. Facts were checked against hotel pages, Atout France, the MICHELIN Guide and Forbes Travel Guide. We have not stayed at or rated the hotels ourselves, and the order is not based on commission.

Booking buttons go to each hotel's official website. They are plain links, and Culture Detour earns nothing from them.

Questions before you go

Which luxury hotels are closest to the Louvre Museum?

Hôtel du Louvre and Hôtel Regina Louvre. By our walking estimates, both are 2 to 3 minutes from the Carrousel entrance and under 10 minutes from the Pyramid. Nolinski is about 5 minutes from the Carrousel entrance.

Is there a luxury hotel with a view of the Louvre?

Hôtel du Louvre says some rooms have balconies with views over the Louvre, the Comédie-Française and avenue de l'Opéra. The Regina faces the Louvre and the Tuileries, and some Le Meurice rooms look over the Tuileries. Book a room category that names the view and confirm it with the hotel.

Which entrance of the Louvre is closest?

From hotels on rue de Rivoli and around Palais-Royal, the Carrousel entrance at 99 rue de Rivoli is usually the shortest walk, and the Louvre says all visitors can use it. The Pyramid is the main entrance for individual visitors, and the Porte des Lions is on the Seine side. Check the Louvre's entrance map for your date, as entrances can close.

What is a Palace hotel in France?

Palace is an official distinction that Atout France gives to a small group of exceptional five-star hotels, renewed every three years. The 2026 list names 13 Palaces in Paris, including Le Meurice, Cheval Blanc Paris and Hôtel de Crillon. The Ritz Paris is not on it.

Can I walk from these hotels to Musée d'Orsay?

Yes. From the Regina, Hôtel du Louvre and Le Meurice, Orsay is about 11 to 14 minutes on foot across the Seine.
