Castel Sant’Angelo has served as an imperial tomb, fortress, papal residence and prison. Its Renaissance painted rooms and outdoor views are part of the museum visit.
Allow around two hours, with extra time for an exhibition.
Construction is affecting the approach and some routes. Check current visitor notices before arriving.
Adult admission is €18; under-eighteens and eligible concession categories have different admission rules. Ordinary tickets are named, and visitors must bring original identification matching the booking.
One name correction is allowed within the deadline stated in the ticket conditions.
A standard museum ticket does not automatically include a Passetto di Borgo tour. Those visits have separate tickets, routes and schedules.
Ordinary hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–19:30, with last entry at 18:30. Free Sundays have their own on-site ticket arrangements.
Through December 2026, the first Monday of each month has a special 14:00–20:00 opening, with last entry at 19:00. The €5 ticket is sold on-site, and groups are not admitted.
These arrangements are not confirmed for 2027.
Castel Sant’Angelo and the Vatican Museums have separate entrances and tickets. Leave plenty of time between reservations: a Vatican Museums visit can take much of the day.
