The best luxury hotels near the Musée d'Orsay for art lovers
Sleep a short walk from Monet, Van Gogh and Degas: four Palace and five-star hotels near the Musée d'Orsay, compared by walk time, art stories and which entrance to use.
In this article
In 1958, General de Gaulle stood in the ballroom of a railway hotel on the Left Bank and held the press conference that announced his return to power. The hotel sat inside the Gare d'Orsay, a station that was later threatened with demolition and replacement by a big modern hotel, and was saved only when it was listed as a historic monument in 1973. Today the same building holds Monet, Van Gogh and Degas, and its great station clocks still face the Seine.
The best way to see it is the traveller's way: arrive early, leave for lunch, come back for the afternoon light. That only works if your hotel is close. We compared four Palace and five-star hotels within an easy walk, measured the routes on OpenStreetMap, and checked each one against its official site. One detail matters more than usual right now: Orsay is renovating its reception areas until summer 2028, and which door you use depends on your ticket.
The four hotels at a glance

Walk times are our estimates from each hotel door to the museum's forecourt on rue de la Légion d'Honneur, using OpenStreetMap walking routes at an easy pace. Rates at all four are in the top band, so check live prices for your dates.

Orsay insider tips before you book
Orsay's renovation changes the arrival routine more than the visit itself. All collections and exhibitions stay open, but the entrances have been split by ticket type.

- Palace distinction (Atout France). Rebranded Mandarin Oriental in April 2025.
- 45 boulevard Raspail, 75006 Paris
- About 16 minutes to Orsay, 16 to the Musée Rodin and 22 to the Louvre Pyramid.
The Lutetia opened on 28 December 1910, built by the Boucicaut family who owned Le Bon Marché across the street. Its facade, carved with vines, trellises and grapes by Léon Binet, sits right on the line between Art Nouveau and Art Deco, and the facades, halls and salons are protected as a historic monument.
The hotel says Picasso and Matisse made it their Paris base, and James Joyce stayed in early 1940, his last Paris address. Artists left their own mark too: the hotel's press kit names works by César, Arman and Philippe Hiquily, and a restored fresco by Adrien Karbowsky in Bar Joséphine. In 1945 it was chosen to receive deportees returning from the camps.
A perfect art day from here
- Morning: walk 16 minutes to the Musée Rodin and see The Thinker in the garden before the crowds.
- Midday: continue about 15 minutes along rue de Grenelle and rue de Bellechasse to Orsay for a timed afternoon slot.
- Evening: book a top-floor Eiffel View balcony room and watch the tower light up over the Left Bank.
Honest drawback: It is the furthest of the four from Orsay, and the walk crosses boulevard Saint-Germain. If you plan several Orsay visits, Pont Royal is less than half the distance.

Hôtel Pont Royal: the literary five-star closest to Orsay

- Five-star, 75 rooms and suites.
- 5-7 rue de Montalembert, 75007 Paris
- About 7 minutes to Orsay, 15 to the Louvre Pyramid and 15 to the Musée Rodin.
Built in 1750 as a residence for writers and run as a hotel since 1815, Pont Royal became Left Bank legend in 1940 when its basement bar opened next to the Gallimard publishing house. Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir drank there when the Café de Flore got too crowded.
The spirit is still literary and musical. The hotel runs monthly literary dinners, live jazz in Bar F-Sharp on Monday, Thursday and Saturday evenings, and until 4 January 2027 a pop-up exhibition, Collection Parisienne, by the artist Aurélie Clérault. Guests also have direct access to L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon, which the hotel lists as one MICHELIN star.
A perfect art day from here
- Morning: be at Orsay's quay entrance, 7 minutes away, for the 9:30 opening.
- Lunch: L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon downstairs, counter seats included.
- Afternoon: cross the Pont Royal to the Tuileries and the Orangerie's Water Lilies, then jazz at Bar F-Sharp.
Honest drawback: It is not a Palace, and some standard rooms are compact. Eiffel Tower views depend on the room category, so book one that names the view.

Le Meurice: Orsay, the Orangerie and the Louvre in one walk
- Palace distinction. Three MICHELIN Keys.
- 228 rue de Rivoli, 75001 Paris
- About 11 minutes to Orsay, 8 to the Orangerie and 12 to the Louvre Pyramid.
Le Meurice faces the Tuileries, which makes it the best base if Orsay is one of three museums on your list. Cross the garden and the Passerelle Léopold-Sédar-Senghor footbridge and you are at Orsay; turn right instead and the Orangerie's Water Lilies are 8 minutes away.
The hotel's artistic history is surrealist: Salvador Dalí stayed here, and Restaurant Le Dalí keeps his name. It is our pick for the Louvre too, which we cover in detail in our Louvre hotel guide.
Honest drawback: It is a Right Bank hotel, so evenings in Saint-Germain mean crossing the river. Tuileries views are not standard in every room.

Hôtel de Crillon: the Orangerie first, Orsay second

- Palace distinction. Two MICHELIN Keys.
- 10 place de la Concorde, 75008 Paris
- About 9 minutes to the Orangerie and 17 to Orsay across the Seine.
The Crillon's ceilings are listed historic monuments, and one of its 18th-century boudoirs, by the designer Pierre-Adrien Pâris, was sold off and now hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Peggy Guggenheim, Jean Cocteau and the sculptor César were regulars.
For an Orsay trip it works best as a two-museum base: the Orangerie is a short walk across Place de la Concorde, and Orsay is a pleasant 17 minutes over the Pont de la Concorde and along the quay.
Honest drawback: It is the furthest Palace from Orsay's entrances, and Place de la Concorde is a wide, busy crossing. Pick it for the hotel itself, not for the shortest walk.

How to choose

Choose Pont Royal if Orsay is the main event and you want to walk in at opening time. Choose the Lutetia if you want the Left Bank's grand hotel and a day that also includes Rodin. Choose Le Meurice or the Crillon if your list includes the Orangerie and the Louvre, since the footbridge makes Orsay easy from the Right Bank.
- Also considered: Hôtel Bourgogne & Montana is about 9 minutes from Orsay and charming, but it is a four-star hotel, so it falls outside this luxury list.
