Luxury hotels near the British Museum and National Gallery, London
London's two great free museums sit a 15-minute walk apart. These five luxury hotels put you between them, with real walk times and the art inside each hotel.
In this article
In 1899, Claude Monet checked into the Savoy, took rooms above the Thames and started painting the view: Waterloo Bridge, Charing Cross Bridge, Parliament in fog. He came back in 1900 and 1901. You can still sleep on those floors, nine minutes on foot from the National Gallery.
London makes great museums easy: the British Museum and the National Gallery are both free, both open every day, and about a quarter of an hour apart. The sweet spot for a luxury stay is the band between Holborn, the Strand and Trafalgar Square. We measured each hotel on OpenStreetMap to both museums and to the Courtauld, and checked the art inside every one.

- Five-star, a Rosewood hotel.
- 252 High Holborn, London WC1V 7EN
- About 10 minutes to the British Museum and 20 to the National Gallery.
Rosewood London occupies the former Pearl Assurance headquarters, an Edwardian landmark built around a grand carriage courtyard. You arrive through that courtyard off High Holborn, which is a fine piece of theatre in a busy street.
Inside, Scarfe's Bar is hung with the caricatures of Gerald Scarfe. From the hotel, Great Russell Street and the Great Court are a ten-minute walk through Bloomsbury squares, close enough to go back for a second, shorter visit.
A perfect art day from here
- Morning: walk 10 minutes to the British Museum for 10:00 and start in the Great Court.
- Afternoon: the Courtauld, about 13 minutes from the hotel.
- Friday evening: the National Gallery until 21:00.
Honest drawback: Holborn is a business district rather than a pretty one. The National Gallery is a 20-minute walk.

One Aldwych: between both museums
- Five-star independent hotel.
- 1 Aldwych, London WC2B 4BZ
- About 14 minutes to the British Museum, 10 to the National Gallery and 3 to the Courtauld.
One Aldwych sits in the former Morning Post building on the corner of the Strand, and it treats art seriously: the hotel has a collection of around 400 pieces. The one everyone remembers is The Boatman by André Wallace, a figure rowing through the lobby.
It is the most balanced address in this guide. The Courtauld, with its Manet Bar at the Folies-Bergère and Van Gogh self-portrait with bandaged ear, is three minutes away.
Honest drawback: The rooms are contemporary rather than grand. Pick it for location and art, not for gilt.

The Savoy: the rooms Monet painted from

- Five-star, a Fairmont hotel.
- Strand, London WC2R 0EZ
- About 17 minutes to the British Museum, 9 to the National Gallery and 4 to the Courtauld.
Claude Monet stayed at the Savoy in 1899, 1900 and 1901 and painted the Thames from his windows: Waterloo Bridge, Charing Cross Bridge and the Houses of Parliament in fog and sun. The hotel names rooms 610 and 611 for his first stay and 510 and 511 for the later ones.
Ask for a river-view room on those floors and you get, give or take a century of change, Monet's view. Then walk nine minutes to the National Gallery and see how he painted London light.
Honest drawback: It is a large and busy hotel, and river-view rooms cost noticeably more. Book a river view if the Monet story is the reason you came.

Corinthia London and Raffles London at The OWO: closest to Trafalgar Square

- Corinthia London: about 7 minutes to the National Gallery.
- Raffles London at The OWO: about 6 minutes to the National Gallery.
If the National Gallery is your priority, look south of Trafalgar Square. Corinthia London, on Whitehall Place, says it has about 250 commissioned artworks across the hotel.
Raffles London at The OWO occupies the Old War Office on Whitehall, a Grade II* listed Edwardian building where Churchill once worked. It is the most dramatic building in this guide, and six minutes from the Sainsbury Wing.
Honest drawback: Both are over 20 minutes on foot from the British Museum. Plan a taxi or the Tube for Bloomsbury.

How to choose
Choose Rosewood London if the British Museum is your main reason for the trip. Choose One Aldwych for both museums and the Courtauld. Choose The Savoy for Monet. Choose Corinthia or The OWO if the National Gallery comes first.
- A guide makes a real difference at the British Museum, where the highlights are spread across a vast building.
