Street art at warehouse scale

STRAAT is a strong choice when you want an art visit with room to move and images that meet you at a distance. Its former NDSM warehouse contains more than 180 works by over 170 artists, with pieces made on site. That setting changes the starting question: instead of asking which famous name to find, notice how an artist makes a picture legible across an enormous space. The surrounding industrial structure gives you a useful sense of scale.

Look twice, from different distances

Start with a loose circuit before committing to a favourite area. Choose one image that attracts you immediately and another that initially seems harder to read. From farther away, compare their silhouettes, colour blocks and movement; closer in, look at edges, layers and marks. You do not need specialist vocabulary to do this. A useful visit can grow out of three or four sustained encounters rather than a photograph of every work. Avoid assuming that a particular artist will be working during your visit.

A timely connection with New York

At the October 2026 review, ART IS NOT A CRIME runs from 9 October 2026 to 13 March 2027 and is included in ordinary admission. It explores Henry Chalfant's documentation of graffiti and its relationship to the Dutch scene. The ESSENCE, also included, runs through 30 December 2026 and looks at graffiti's underlying visual language. These give you two different questions to carry back into the main collection: how an image travels, and how a writer constructs a recognisable mark.

Choose the right ferry

From the IJ side of Amsterdam Centraal, take the free NDSM ferry; the museum describes a crossing of under fifteen minutes. This is a different destination from the Buiksloterweg ferry used for Eye. Allow waiting time as well as the crossing, and leave room for a look around the wharf. Treat STRAAT as an anchor for this part of Noord rather than a quick stop between tightly timed appointments.

Match the ticket to your day

Standard adult admission is € 21.50. Check the age-based and card options before paying, especially for a family. Thursday late opening begins on 15 October 2026, but dated closures override the weekly pattern. The evening-ticket wording differs between the visitor page and the ticket store, so use the selected date's actual product conditions. An evening price should never be assumed to apply to an afternoon arrival.

Dress for the building

The warehouse can be cold or warm with the weather, so layers matter more here than in a tightly climate-controlled gallery. The accessible route also needs thought: uneven surfaces and metal floor strips create obstacles, and the panorama deck is not wheelchair accessible. The lift reaches the second-floor café and Mezzanine Space. Read the detailed access statement before choosing a route if step-free access is important to your visit.

Leave time to return to a favourite

Budget roughly ninety minutes to two and a half hours inside as an editorial estimate, adding travel and any workshop separately. Bring headphones for the free Dutch or English phone-based audio tour. Finish by returning to one work after you have seen the exhibitions: you may notice a different rhythm or reference the second time. A modest plan leaves more attention for that final look.

Questions before you go

Which tickets are available for children and students?

Ages 13–18 pay € 11.50; ages 0–12 are free with an adult ticket, with up to five child tickets per adult. Students with valid ID pay € 16.50.

Does the I amsterdam City Card cover entry?

Yes. Select the City Card ticket and bring the valid card for scanning. The live ticket store also lists Stadspas entry at no charge.

Can I move a booking?

The FAQ allows date changes through ticket support until 24 hours before the visit. Cancellations need a valid reason and a request through the same service. Check the terms on your ticket.

Is the audio tour audio description?

No. The free Dutch and English audio tour provides interpretation on your phone; STRAAT states that it does not provide audio description.
