Luxury hotels near the Rijksmuseum: four Amsterdam addresses worth the splurge

A museum with a road through it, a masterpiece cut down to fit between two doors, and four luxury hotels within a canal-side walk. Where to stay near the Rijksmuseum.

In this article

There is a road through the Rijksmuseum. When the Dutch state commissioned a new national museum, the brief required a public passage straight through the building, so that it could serve as a gateway between the old city and the new neighbourhoods to the south. The architect, Pierre Cuypers, also had to drive 8,000 piles into Amsterdam's soft ground to hold it up, then quietly carved a portrait of himself into the decoration outside, like the master builders of medieval cathedrals. King William III, who reportedly disliked the choice of architect, did not attend the openings.

The museum opened in 1885 and it is still full of surprises, starting with Rembrandt's Night Watch, which is missing a piece nobody has ever found. Stay close and you can visit at 9:00, return for a second look in the afternoon, and walk home along the canals. Here are four luxury hotels near the Rijksmuseum, with walking times measured on real streets.

The four compared

Walking times are calculated on the street network from each hotel to the Rijksmuseum entrance and the Van Gogh Museum. The three canal-belt hotels are a pleasant walk south along the canals, and Amsterdam's trams are an easy alternative in the rain.

Conservatorium: the museum quarter on your doorstep

The neo-Gothic former savings bank on Van Baerlestraat, now Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium.
  • Paulus Potterstraat 50, Museumplein
  • About 8 minutes to the Rijksmuseum, 3 to the Van Gogh Museum, 1 to the Stedelijk

The late 19th-century neo-Gothic building on the corner of Van Baerlestraat began life as the Rijkspostspaarbank, the national post office savings bank, then became the Sweelinck Conservatory of music, which gave the hotel its name. The Italian architect Piero Lissoni transformed it into a design-led luxury hotel.

This is the address for an art-heavy stay: Rijksmuseum at opening, lunch, then the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk without ever needing a tram.

Honest drawback: It is on the edge of the museum quarter, so the canal belt is a 15 to 20 minute walk away.

Waldorf Astoria: six canal palaces on the Herengracht

  • Herengracht 542-556
  • 93 rooms with canal or garden views
  • About 16 minutes to the Rijksmuseum

The Waldorf Astoria spans six 17th and 18th-century canal palaces at Herengracht 542-556, and its 93 rooms, suites and lofts look out over either the canal or a private garden. It is the most private-feeling of the four, a world away from the museum crowds.

Head south across the canal belt and you reach the museum's famous passage, the natural way into Museumplein from the old city.

Honest drawback: At about 16 minutes, it is a walk rather than a hop to the museums.

De L'Europe: a suite with Rijksmuseum design

Hotel De L'Europe on the Amstel in central Amsterdam.
  • Nieuwe Doelenstraat 2, on the Amstel
  • 107 rooms and suites
  • About 16 minutes to the Rijksmuseum

De L'Europe is Amsterdam's grand hotel on the water, with 107 rooms and suites. Art lovers should ask about the KOKKE House Suite: it pays homage to two KOKKE House designs that are in the permanent collections of the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum.

From here the Rijksmuseum is a 16-minute walk, and the Rembrandt House Museum is close in the other direction.

Honest drawback: It is the most central of the four, which also means the busiest streets outside.

Pulitzer: 25 canal houses, one hotel

  • Prinsengracht 323
  • Five-star, in 25 canal houses from the 17th and 18th centuries
  • About 22 minutes to the Rijksmuseum

Pulitzer is spread across 25 canal houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, joined into one five-star hotel on the Prinsengracht. It feels like living inside a Golden Age street, and it is the best base for the Nine Streets and the Jordaan.

It is the furthest from the Rijksmuseum, but the walk south along the Prinsengracht is one of the loveliest in Amsterdam.

Honest drawback: The furthest of the four from Museumplein, at about 22 minutes on foot.

Most visitors miss this: what is missing from the Night Watch

Rembrandt's Night Watch, trimmed on all sides in 1715 to fit between two doors.

Rembrandt's Night Watch was painted for the Kloveniersdoelen, a civic guard headquarters. In 1715 it was moved to the Town Hall on the Dam, now the Royal Palace, and to fit it between two doors four pieces were cut off. The biggest came off the left side, and none of them has ever been found. The name Night Watch only appears in 1797; it was never Rembrandt's title.

Look closely at the centre and you will find the detail guides love most: the shadow of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq's hand falling across the coat of his lieutenant, Willem van Ruytenburch. During the Second World War the painting was hidden, and from 1942 it was kept in a cave in the St Pietersberg near Maastricht.

Rijksmuseum tickets and tours

An archive press photo of the public passage under the Rijksmuseum being closed to cyclists.

The Rijksmuseum is open daily from 9:00 to 17:00 at Museumstraat 1. Adults pay €25 and visitors aged 18 and under enter free. Book a timed ticket for 9:00 and head straight for the Gallery of Honour before it fills.

For context on the Dutch Golden Age, a small-group tour capped at 12 guests or a private tour with an art historian is worth it here; the collection is vast and the stories are in the details.
