READ A CITY, THEN LOOK AGAIN

Canal houses, photography and the city outside

This route gives the canal belt more substance than a succession of attractive facades. Start with the city’s physical shape, then change the way you look through photography or a historic interior. The stops are close enough to connect on foot, but four full visits would crowd the day. Choose the Museum of the Canals plus one photography museum, or a photography visit plus Museum Van Loon. The other buildings can remain points of orientation.

01 / Give the waterways a framework

Museum of the Canals

Begin at Herengracht 386 if you want context before walking. Its multimedia route offers a structured introduction; leave enough time before last entry rather than arriving for only the final minutes. Afterwards, choose one detail to track outdoors: the relationship between house and quay, the width of a plot, or how a crossing changes your view along the water. You are looking for connections, not testing yourself on dates.

02 / Move from the city to an image

Huis Marseille

Walk towards Keizersgracht 401 for a photography visit if the current exhibition interests you. The historic rooms influence how an image is approached and seen; notice the change between looking across a room and standing close. Check the programme and changeover dates before committing. The museum’s stairs prevent wheelchair access. If it is closed or unsuitable, keep this as an exterior stop and consider Foam’s detailed access information before continuing.

03 / Follow the canal at walking pace

Keizersgracht to Foam

Continue southeast along Keizersgracht towards 609. This is the longest connecting stretch, so give it time rather than treating it as dead space between tickets. Look for the way reflections fragment the same buildings you see directly. At Foam, choose the current exhibition because its subject interests you. You do not need to visit both photography museums to make the comparison meaningful; one can be saved for another day.

04 / Ask who used the room

Museum Van Loon

Continue a short distance to Keizersgracht 672. If you choose to go inside, let the domestic setting raise questions about use, display and the work required to sustain a household. This changes the conversation from photographs to rooms and objects. Many steps and thresholds restrict mobility access. If you have already had enough indoor looking, finish the route outside and take time to discuss which details of the canal belt you now see differently.

Practical notes

Allow around three to five hours with one or two indoor visits and breaks; longer visits are optional. Walking distance is an approximate 1.5–2 km depending on crossings and diversions.

Canal pavements, bridges and museum interiors have distinct accessibility conditions; this is not an audited step-free route. Watch for cycles when crossing.

Every museum has its own admission rules. Free pass eligibility does not imply every exhibition or timed slot is available.

Foam remains open during works listed through October 2026. Recheck current notices and do not infer completion from the month ending.
