A timely return to Singapore’s history

The National Museum’s renewed Singapore History Gallery opened on 10 October 2026. It is the main reason to put the museum back on a culture itinerary now, with an updated route through more than 700 years of the island’s past.

The wider museum remains in a phased renovation, so this is a visit to a newly reopened core experience rather than a promise that every permanent gallery has returned.

Begin through Singapore Odyssea in the Shaw Foundation Glass Rotunda, as the museum now directs. This immersive prelude uses light, animation and interactive storytelling before the route continues into the object-led history gallery.

The change from atmosphere to evidence can be a useful way into a long and complex story.

Look beyond the turning points

The history gallery moves through seven broad sections, from maritime beginnings to the contemporary city. In the early rooms, the Singapore Stone and a newly commissioned jongkong boat place the island within a regional world that predates British rule.

Later sections consider migration, the colonial city, war, self-government and the changes brought by independence.

Everyday objects give the national story a more intimate scale. A restored HDB lift helps make the move into high-rise housing tangible, while sections on food, fashion, film and nightlife explore changing expressions of belonging.

Allow time for these details, not just the major political dates.

Storytelling in different forms

Singapore Odyssea offers a deliberately different experience. An RFID wristband activates a wildlife-inspired companion, guiding visitors through animated moments and imagined encounters rooted in local myths.

It connects the surrounding seas with questions about history and the environment. Treat this as interpretive storytelling, then use the history gallery to look more closely at objects and their contexts.

The museum offers audio tours for both experiences, accessed through QR codes at the entrances. Bring your own earphones if you want to use them.

This is a practical option for visitors who prefer to pause and set their own pace, especially when different members of a group want to spend longer with different subjects.

The museum is still changing

The building opened in 1887 as the Raffles Library and Museum. Its formal nineteenth-century frontage and later glass-and-metal extension make the architecture another conversation between past and present.

Look at the exterior before going in, but follow the current visitor route inside rather than relying on an older floor plan.

The Life in Singapore galleries and Goh Seng Choo Gallery remain under renovation, with reopening planned for the first quarter of 2027. Allow 120–180 minutes for the currently available main experience as an editorial estimate.

Standard tourist general admission is S$18, and the museum now takes cashless payments for tickets.
