THE HELSINKI MUSEUM GUIDES

Helsinki museums: Finnish art, design and the sea

Helsinki makes it easy to move between different ideas of Finnish culture. The Ateneum follows painting and national identity, Kiasma asks what contemporary art can be, and HAM adds Tove Jansson’s public commissions. Design belongs in the same conversation, while a ferry to Suomenlinna changes both the landscape and the historical scale. Choose one substantial visit, then a second stop that gives the day a different texture.

Start with the collection that interests you

The Ateneum is the clearest introduction to Finnish painting, including the changing relationships between landscape, identity and modern life. Kiasma is a better first choice if installations, moving images and performance interest you. Its ramps and changing daylight are part of the experience. Both belong to the Finnish National Gallery, but they are distinct museum visits. Choosing one carefully usually produces a better day than hurrying through both.

Make room for an artist beyond the familiar image

HAM’s Tove Jansson frescoes open up a different side of the artist from the Moomin books. Their restaurant setting, party scenes and personal references reward looking closely. The museum occupies Tennispalatsi, a former indoor-tennis building near Kamppi. Across the city centre, the Sinebrychoff Art Museum combines European Old Masters with a furnished collector’s home. The free house museum is a substantial cultural stop in its own right; paid temporary exhibitions are a separate decision.

Check the exhibition before choosing the building

Amos Rex puts large, flexible exhibition spaces beneath the domed landscape of Lasipalatsi Square. Its programme changes substantially from show to show, so choose by the current exhibition rather than expecting a fixed greatest-hits collection. The Frosterus collection adds an early-modern counterpoint. The Architecture & Design Museum is now a merged institution at Korkeavuorenkatu 23. Aalto Design and Craft Punk lead its autumn 2026 programme. Older advice sending visitors to two separate museum buildings needs updating.

Let the sea change the day

Suomenlinna Museum is a compact introduction to the inhabited sea fortress, with objects and a short film that give the ramparts a historical framework. It is one museum within the wider island site, rather than a ticket to every attraction. The ferry journey, outdoor walking and museum visit belong in the same plan. Leave this as a separate half-day instead of adding it to a tightly packed city-centre museum circuit.

Use the calendar before buying

Monday is a common closing day, but Amos Rex normally closes on Tuesday. Changeovers and building work can override that pattern. Amos Rex reopens on 14 October 2026 after its installation period. The Architecture & Design Museum closes from 7 January through 4 March 2027, reopening on 5 March. At the Ateneum, the dated renovation notice directs visitors to Ateneuminkuja while the main entrance is closed. Follow the individual practical panels for these exceptions.
